Ternopil (until 1944— Tarnopol)—a city, the administrative center of Ternopil region. A Jewish community settled here in the 16th century. In 1931, there were 13,999 Jews in the town. Ternopil was occupied on July 2, 1941, soon after the beginning of the German-Soviet war. Before their retreat from the city, the Soviet forces shot prisoners of the local prison. The Nazi occupiers tried to accuse the Jewish community of this crime. This caused a huge pogrom organized by German military units with the participation of the local population, which lasted from July 4 to 11, 1941. Following the Holocaust policies, the Nazi occupiers carried out executions both in and around the city, where Jews from Ternopil lived or tried to escape. On November 15, 1943, 6 Jews were killed in the village of Zaboiky, 12 km away from the city. As a result of combat operations, in April 1944, the territory was taken over by the Red Army. |

Тернопіль (до 1944 р. Тарнополь) – місто, адміністративний центр однойменної області, де із XVI ст. проживала іудейська громада. Станом на 1931 р. у місті було зареєстровано 13 999 євреїв. Із початком німецько-радянської війни, Тернопіль був окупований 2 липня 1941 р. Напередодні свого відступу з міста радянські силовики розстріляли бранців у місцевій в'язниці. Нацистські окупанти намагались всіляко звинуватити у цьому злочині іудейську громаду. Це стало причиною величезного погрому організованого німецькими мілітарними підрозділами за участю місцевого населення, який тривав з 4 по 11 липня 1941 р. Втілюючи політику Голокосту нацистські окупанти проводили розстріли, як у самому місті так і в його околицях, де проживали або ж де намагались врятуватись євреї із Тернополя. Так, 15 листопада 1943 р. було вбито 6 євреїв у селі Забойки, що за 12 км від міста. У результаті ведення бойових дій у квітні 1944 р. дану територію зайняла Червона армія. |
