Berezhany is a town in Ternopil district of Ternopil region. During World War II, it was the administrative center of Brzezany district, and a Jewish community lived there. Soon after the beginning of the German-Soviet war, on July 3, 1941, the town was occupied. The Nazi government began to implement Holocaust policies. During the year, mass executions of Jews took place not only in the town but also in its environs. Another shooting took place on February 17, 1942. Dozens of Jews were killed in Brzezany that day. During one of the shootings in June 1942, several hundred members of the Jewish community were killed. Executions in the town continued. At the same time, some local Jews were deported to the Belzec concentration camp (now Lublin Voivodeship, Poland). As a result of combat operations, on July 22, 1944, the town was taken over by the Red Army. |

Бережани – місто у Тернопільському районі однойменної області. У роки Другої світової війни адміністративний центр Бережанського району, де проживала іудейська громада. Із початком німецько-радянської війни, місто було окуповане 3 липня 1941 р. Нацистська влада почала втілювати політику Голокосту. Упродовж року пройшли масові страти євреїв не лише в місті, але й в околицях. Черговий розстріл відбувся 17 лютого 1942 р. Того дня у Бережанах було вбито декілька десятків євреїв. Під час одного з розстрілів, який відбувся у червні 1942 р. загинуло знову декількасот представників іудейської громади. Страти у місті продовжувались. Поряд із цим частина місцевих євреїв була депортована у концтабір Белжец (нині Люблінське воєводство Польщі). У результаті ведення бойових дій 22 липня 1944 р. місто зайняла Червона армія. |
