Berezhany is a town in Ternopil district of Ternopil region. During World War II, it was the administrative center of Brzezany district, and a Jewish community lived there. After the German attack on the USSR, the Bolsheviks shot the prisoners of the local prison. On July 7, 1941, a group of 30 Jews was forced to dig graves for them in an Orthodox cemetery. The same group of 30 people was killed in the cemetery on the same day on charges of the involvement of Jews in the shootings (the claims of such participation were circulated by the German authorities). Mass executions in Brzezany continued. At the same time, some local Jews were deported to the Belzec concentration camp (now Lublin Voivodeship, Poland). As a result of combat operations, on July 22, 1944, the town was taken over by the Red Army. |

Бережани – місто у Тернопільському районі однойменної області. У роки Другої світової війни адміністративний центр Бережанського району, де проживала іудейська громада. Після нападу Німеччини на СРСР більшовики розстріляли бранців місцевої в’язниці. 7 липня 1941 р. групу із 30 євреїв змусили викопати для них могили на православному кладовищі. Під приводом звинувачень у причетності євреїв до розстрілів, які поширювала німецька влада, вказана група із 30 осіб була вбита того ж дня на кладовищі. Масові страти у Бережанах продовжувались. Поряд із цим частина місцевих євреїв була депортована у концтабір Белжец (нині Люблінське воєводство Польщі). У результаті ведення бойових дій 22 липня 1944 р. місто зайняла Червона армія. |
