Kremenets is a town in the north of Ternopil region. The local Jewish community has been known since the 15th century. In 1897, 6,539 Jews lived in Kremenets, comprising 37% of town’s total population. On July 2, 1941, soon after the beginning of the German-Soviet war, Kremenets was occupied by Wehrmacht units. The Nazi government began to implement Holocaust policies. On March 1, 1942, a ghetto was established in the central part of the town. Its inhabitants were executed in August 1942. The shootings took place at the site of the shooting range of the 42nd Yakut Infantry Regiment of the Russian Imperial Army. It is known that on August 11, 1942, about 5,000 Jews were executed here, on August 14—1,500, and on August 20—1,210 Jews. Along with the Jews of Kremenets, Jews from the surrounding settlements, including the villages of Velyki Berezhtsi and Mali Berezhtsi, were shot dead here. In 1992, a monument was erected on the site of the tragedy. On Sunday, March 19, 1944, Kremenets was taken over by the Red Army. " |

Кременець – місто на півночі Тернопільської області. Іудейська громада відома тут із XV ст. Станом на 1897 р. у Кременці проживало 6 539 євреїв, які складали 37 % від загальної кількості жителів. Після початку німецько-радянської війни, 2 липня 1941 р. Кременець зайняли підрозділи вермахту. Нацистська влада почала втілювати політику Голокосту. 1 березня 1942 р. у центрі місті було створено гетто. Страта його жителів відбулась у серпні 1942 р. Розстріли проходили на території стрільбища 42-го Якутського піхотного полку російської імператорської армії. Відомо, що 11 серпня 1942 р. тут стратили близько 5000 євреїв, 14 серпня – 1500, 20 серпня – 1210 євреїв. Поряд із євреями Кременця були розстріляні євреї навколишніх населених пунктів, у тому числі сіл Великі і Малі Бережці. У 1992 р. на місці трагедії встановили пам’ятник. 19 березня 1944 р. Кременець зайняла Червона армія. |
