The town of Tysmenytsia, Ivano-Frankivsk district, is located on the bank of the Vorona river. The first mention of Tysmenytsia dates back to 1142. The oldest information about Jews in the town dates back to the 15th century, when the first Jewish tenants appeared here. In the early 20th century. Baron Hirsch's Jewish private school operated in the town. As of 1890, there were 2,492 Jews in Tysmenytsia, which was 32.5% of the total population; in 1931—1,185 (15.7%). Tysmenytsia was occupied by the Hungarian army on July 3, 1941. The Hungarian administration obliged the Jews of Tysmenytsia to wear a badge and perform forced labor. Later, a Judenrat chaired by Jacob Ziegler, a post of the German gendarmerie, and the Ukrainian auxiliary police were established here. In August 1941, with the transfer of power to the German civil administration, the situation of the Jews deteriorated considerably: the Germans confiscated a significant amount of Jewish property, and all Jews above 8 years of age were required to wear white armbands with the blue star of David. In the spring of 1942, a ghetto was established in Tysmenytsia. The Germans liquidated it in August of the same year. Most of the Jews of Tysmenytsia were sent to Stanislav (now Ivano-Frankivsk) and Belzhets ghettos. Jews who remained in the town were killed near a Jewish cemetery in April 1943. About 63 Jews were killed in the shooting. Tysmenytsia was liberated on July 26, 1944. A memorial was been erected at the place of execution. |
