Jews began to settle in Lubny, Poltava region, in the first half of the 17th century. The 1897 census recorded 3006 Jews, or 30% of the town’s population. Before World War II, Lubny was home to 2,833 Jews (10.5%). The town was occupied by the Nazis on July 10, 1941. On October 16, in the ravine near the village of Zasullia, Sonderkommando 4a shot about 1,500 Jews. Most likely, this same location was used to shoot 73 Jews on November 18, 1941—those who managed to escape from the October action—and later 150 Jews who were shot in October 1942—in the spring of 1943. The second place of execution of the Jews of Lubny is a shooting range on the outskirts of Lubny. Here, 700 Jews from Lubny and surrounding villages were shot on April 6, 1942. The town was liberated from the Nazis by the Red Army on September 18, 1943. |
