Volodymyr-Volynskyi is a city in the Volyn region. The first mention of Jews here dates back to the 12th century. The community was actively growing. As of 1897, there were already 5,869 Jews living in Volodymyr-Volynskyi, who comprised up to 60% of the total population. The city was occupied on the second day of the German-Soviet war, on June 23, 1941. The killings of Jews started immediately. The largest massacre took place in the village of Pyatydni, 8 km away from the city. The shootings took place from September 1 to September 15, 1942. The total death toll could range from 13,500 to 18,000. The Jews sought refuge in the surrounding villages. One of the groups built a dugout in the woods near the village of Shystiv, 5 km away from Volodymyr-Volynskyi. Some unknown bandits attacked the Jews on February 20, 1944. 11 people died. Among them there were three children aged eight, nine, and fourteen, and two men; all the rest were women. Five people from the group survived: at the time of the attack they were away collecting twigs for kindling. As a result of combat operations, the territory was taken over by the Red Army in July 1944.

Володимир-Волинський – місто у Волинській області. Перші згадки про євреїв відносяться до XII ст. Громада активно розвивалась. Станом на 1897 р. у Володимирі-Волинському вже проживало 5 869 євреїв, які складали майже 60% від загальної чисельності населення. Місто було окуповане на другий день німецько-радянської війни – 23 червня 1941 р. Одразу розпочались вбивства євреїв. Найбільша розправа пройшла у с. П’ятидні, що за 8 км від міста. Розстріли відбувалися з 1 по 15 вересня 1942 р. Загальна кількість жертв сягнула від 13 500 до 18 000 людей. Євреїв шукали порятунку в навколишніх селах. Одна з груп побудувала землянку в лісі неподалік с. Шистів, що за 5 км від Володимира-Волинського. Невідомі бандити напали на євреїв 20 лютого 1944 р. Загинуло 11 осіб. Серед них троє дітей восьми, дев’яти і чотирнадцяти років, два чоловіки, решта – жінки. Із групи врятувалось п’ятеро осіб, які у цей час збирали хмиз. У результаті ведення бойових дій у липні 1944 р. вказану територію зайняла Червона армія.
