The Jewish community of Ratne (now a village in the Volyn region) was known since the 16th century. The town was growing dynamically. As of 1897, there were already 2,219 Jews living in Ratne; they comprised up to 71 % of the total population. The arrival of the German army on June 28, 1941 was immediately followed by the first executions of Jews. They took place not only in Ratne, but also in the surrounding villages. Some fell victim to local looters. For instance, in June 1943, on the Lyut hamlet, near the village of Brody, Yakiv Hoffman, the son-in-law of the blacksmith Herzel Kamenetsky from the village of Hirnyky, was killed by unknown people. Most local Jews died on a sandy hill near the village of Prokhid in August 1942. In July 1944 the Red Army took permanent control over the territory. The locals arranged a grave at the burial place of Jacob Hoffman. |

Єврейська громада Ратного (нині селище у Волинській області) починає формуватись у XVI ст. Містечко активно розвивається. За переписом 1897 р. у Ратному проживало 2 219 євреїв, які становили понад 71 % від загальної чисельності населення. Перші розстріли євреїв розпочались одразу із прибуттям німецької армії 28 червня 1941 р. Вони відбувались не лише в Ратному, але й у навколишніх селах. Дехто став жертвою місцевих мародерів. Так, у червні 1943 р. на хуторі Лють, що поблизу с. Броди невідомими особами був вбитий Яків Гофман – зять коваля Герцеля Каменецького із с. Гірники. Більшість місцевих євреїв загинула на піщаному пагорбі поблизу с. Прохід у серпні 1942 р. У липні 1944 р. Червона армія остаточно взяла цю територію під свій контроль. На місці поховання Якова Гофман місцеві жителі облаштували могилу. |
