Olevsk is a town, a district center in Zhytomyr region. It has been known in historical documents since late 15th century. Jews settled in Olevsk in the first half of the 18th century, and in the late 19th century made up the majority of the town's population—1187 people, or 56.5%. By the beginning of World War II, the Jewish population of Olevsk decreased in percentage (to 42%), and increased in number (to 2196 people).
The town was occupied in early August 1941. Most Jews managed to evacuate; no more than 20% stayed in the town. Until November, the Ukrainian insurgent army Poliska Sich led by Ataman Taras Bulba-Borovets took over administrative functions in the town. This period was marked by Jewish pogroms.
On November 20, 535 Jews of Olevsk were shot dead near the village of Varvarivka. Some of those who managed to escape the shooting were later shot in the vicinity of the railway bridge. The exact number of victims and the place of the murder are unknown.

Олевськ – місто, районний центр Житомирської області. В історичних документах відоме з кінця XV століття. Євреї оселяються в Олевську в першій половині XVIII століття і на кінець наступного століття складають більшість населення містечка – 1187 осіб або 56,5%. До початку Другої світової війни у відсотковому відношенні єврейське населення Олевська зменшилось (до 42%), а в кількісному зросло – до 2196 осіб.
Місто було окуповане на початку серпня 1941 року. Більшості євреїв вдалося евакуюватися, залишилось в місті не більше 20%. До листопада адміністративні функції в місті взяла на себе Українська повстанська армія «Поліська Січ» отамана Тараса Бульби-Боровця. Цей період позначений єврейськими погромами.
20 листопада 535 олевських євреїв було розстріляно біля с. Варварівка. Деяких з тих, кому вдалося уникнути розстрілу, пізніше розстріляли в околицях залізничного мосту. Точна кількість жертв та місце вбивства невідоме.
