Dovbysh is a town in Baranivka district of Zhytomyr region. The first written mention of the settlement dates back to the second half of the 16th century. As of the end of the 19th century, the Jewish population of Dovbysh was insignificant: 11%, or 92 people. Before World War II, the town was a district center, and since the late 1920s—the center of the Polish national district. In different periods, the town was called Markhlevsk and Shchorsk. Unlike in most towns in the region, the Jewish population of Markhlevsk did not decrease during the years of Soviet rule—it actually increased to 512 people (12% of the population). The town was occupied on July 10, 1941. The majority of the Jews of Dovbysh were exterminated in August and October 1941 in the forest near the road to the village of Ivanivka (3 km away from Dovbysh). In between these campaigns, in September 1941, the Nazis shot Jews hiding in the town after the August shooting. They were placed in the basement of the porcelain factory, divided into groups of several people and shot near the factory. The number of victims can range from 20 to 35 people. |

Довбиш – селище міського типу Баранівського району Житомирської області. Перша письмова згадка населеного пункту датується другою половиною XVI століття. Станом на кінець XIX століття кількість єврейського населення Довбиша була незначною – 11% або 92 особи. До Другої світової війни містечко було районним центром, з кінця 20-х рр. центром польського національного району. Мав назву Мархлевськ, Щорськ. На відміну від більшості містечок регіону, єврейське населення Мархлевська за роки радянської влади не тільки не зменшилось, а й зросло – до 512 осіб (12% населення). Містечко окупували 10 липня 1941 року. Основну частину довбиських євреїв було знищено у серпні та жовтні 1941 року в лісі поблизу дороги на с. Іванівка (3 км від Довбиша). У проміжку між цими акціями, у вересні 1941 року, нацисти розстріляли євреїв, які переховувались у місті після серпневого розстрілу. Їх розмістили у підвалі порцелянової фабрики, розділили на партії по декілька осіб та розстріляли неподалік фабрики. Кількість жертв коливається від 20 до 35 осіб. |
