​Jews settled in Hrytsiv (now a town in Shepetivka district of Khmelnytskyi region) in the 17th century. The Jewish population constituted the overwhelming majority of the urban population: in the late 19th century, 97% of the population were Jews. Over the following decades, the situation changed drastically. As of 1939, Jews made up 36.1% of the local population (1,095 people).
The town was occupied by the Nazis on July 5, 1941. In August 1941, a ghetto surrounded by barbed wire appeared in Hrytsiv. On August 4, 1941, the occupiers gathered some Jews in the school building. On this day, in the Trostianets tract, 3 km away from the town, the 1st Battalion of the 10th SS Infantry Regiment shot 268 Jews of Hrytsiv. Some ghetto residents, including children and elderly women, were allowed to return to the ghetto from the school.

Євреї з’являються в Грицеві (нині селище міського типу Шепетівського району Хмельницької області) у XVII столітті. Єврейське населення складало абсолютну більшість міського населення: наприкінці XIX століття 97% населення були євреями. За наступні десятиліття ситуація радикально змінилась, і станом на 1939 рік євреї складали 36,1% місцевого населення (1095 осіб).
Місто окуповане нацистами 5 липня 1941 року. В серпні 1941 року в Грицеві постало гетто, оточене колючим дротом. 4 серпня 1941 року окупанти зібрали частину євреїв у приміщенні школи. Цього дня в Тростянецькому урочищі за 3 км від міста 1 батальйон 10 піхотного полку СС розстріляв 268 євреїв Грицева. Частині мешканців гетто включно з дітьми та старими жінками дозволили повернутись до гетто зі школи.
