"Chornyi Ostriv is an urban-type settlement in Khmelnytskyi district of Khmelnytskyi region. Jews settled here in the 16th century. According to the 1897 census, the Jewish population comprised 79%—2,216 people. However, at the beginning of World War II, the percentage of Jews in the urban population fell significantly to 28.7% (1,172 people). The town was occupied by the Nazis on July 7, 1941. Only 100 Jews managed to escape; more than a thousand remained in the town. In late July and early August 1941, a ghetto was established in Chornyi Ostriv. Residents were sent to forced labor and had to wear identification badges on their clothes. On October 12, 1942, the ghetto was liquidated. Most of its inhabitants were sent by the Nazis to a labor camp near Proskuriv (now Khmelnytskyi), while those unsuitable for work were shot dead along with Jews from the Felshtyn ghetto. After the campaign, the local police searched the ghetto and found 26 fugitives. They were shot in the town's Jewish cemetery. " |

Чорний острів – селище міського типу Хмельницького району Хмельницької області. Євреї проживали тут із XVI століття. Перепис, проведений у 1897 році, показав, що частка єврейського населення складає 79% - 2216 осіб. Однак на початок Другої світової війни відсоток євреїв серед міського населення суттєво впав – до 28,7% (1172 особи). Містечко було окуповане нацистами 7 липня 1941 року. Евакуюватися вдалося лише 100 євреям, більше тисячі залишилися в місті. В кінці липня – на початку серпня 1941 року в Чорному острові було організоване гетто. Мешканців відправляли на примусові роботи та примушували носити розпізнавальні знаки на одязі. 12 вересня 1942 року гетто було ліквідоване. Більшість його жителів були відправлені нацистами до трудового табору поблизу Проскурова (нині Хмельницький), непрацездатні були розстріляні разом із євреями з фельштинського гетто.
