"Smotrych is an urban-type settlement in the Dunaivtsi district of the Khmelnytskyi region. Jews settled here in the early 18th century. According to the 1897 census, the town was home to 1,725 Jews, who made up 44.2% of the local population. Before World War II, the number of Jews in Smotrych was much smaller: 1075 inhabitants (18.5%). The Nazis occupied Smotrych on July 9, 1941. Just like in many other towns, Jews were registered and required to wear identification marks. In July 1941 (according to other sources, in early August), the Nazis shot about 80 Jews near the Smotrych River. Another place to kill local Jews was the fat melting plant in the north of the town. On September 1, 1942, Einsatzgruppe C shot about 1,800 Jews from Smotrych and neighboring villages. " |

Смотрич – селище міського типу Дунаєвецького району Хмельницької області. Євреї тут відомі з початку XVIII століття. Згідно з переписом 1897 року в місті проживало 1725 євреїв, що становило 44,2% місцевого населення. Перед Другою світовою війною єврейське населення Смотрича було значно меншим: 1075 жителів (18,5%). Нацисти окупували Смотрич 9 липня 1941 року. Подібно до багатьох інших містечок, євреї були піддані реєстрації та зобов’язані носити розпізнавальні знаки. В липні 1941 року (за іншими даними, на початку серпня), нацисти розстріляли близько 80 євреїв поблизу річки Смотрич. Іншими місцем убивства місцевих євреїв стане салотопня на півночі міста. 1 вересня 1942 року айнзатцгрупа C розстріляла тут близько 1800 євреїв зі Смотрича та сусідніх сіл. |
