"Jews began to settle in Dunaivtsi in the first half of the 17th century. The 1897 census recorded 5,198 people, or 66% of the local population. During the civil war and national liberation struggles, local Jews fell victim to pogroms. After the war, two Jewish collective farms were established here. At the beginning of World War II, Jews made up 68% of the population of Dunaivtsi—4778 people. On July 11, 1941, the town was occupied by the Nazis. Within days, Jews were forced to wear identification badges and perform heavy physical labor. When the Jews from Poland and Bessarabia arrived in the town, a Judenrat was established. Later, in the spring of 1942, the establishment of a ghetto ensued. In December 1941, 19 Jews of Dunaivtsi were shot dead at the Jewish cemetery in the village of Sichintsi, south of the town. Mass exterminations of the Jews of the Dunaivtsi ghetto will take place in 1942: a forest near the village of Chankiv and a phosphorus mine near the village of Demyankivtsi. " |

Євреї почали селитись в Дунаївцях у першій половині XVII століття. Перепис 1897 року зафіксував 5198 осіб, що складало 66% місцевого населення. В роки громадянської війни та національно-визвольних змагань місцеві євреї ставали жертвами погромів. Після війни тут було створено два єврейських колгоспи. На початку Другої світової війни євреї складали 68% населення Дунаївців – 4778 осіб. 11 липня 1941 року місто було окуповане нацистами. За декілька днів євреї були змушені носити розпізнавальні знаки та виконувати важку фізичну роботу. Після прибуття до міста євреїв з Польщі та Бессарабії був організований юденрат, а навесні 1942 року – гетто. В грудні 1941 року 19 євреїв з Дунаївців було розстріляно на єврейському кладовищі села Січинці на південь від міста. Масові акції з винищення євреїв дунаєвецького гетто відбудуться в 1942 році: ліс біля села Чаньків та фосфорна шахта біля села Дем’янківці. |
