SAMU atlas guide

Visual guide to the Atlas:  in English, in Ukrainian
The SAMU Atlas delivers one-stop access to a wide variety of informational content. It has three components: interactive maps, a search engine, and web pages containing killing site profiles. The unique aspect of the Atlas is its aim to map and describe the individual Holocaust killing sites. Mass executions of Jews took place at several killing sites in and around the towns and shtetls where Jews resided. In the SAMU Atlas, each killing site is indicated by a marker, which links to a specific profile page that provides additional data.
Clicking on the Shoah Atlas home page will bring the user to a map of Ukraine, where each region (oblast’) is represented by a black monument marker.  When you click on a marker, it will display a label which presents statistics about the pre-war Jewish population and the number of Jews killed in the region. Clicking on the "Learn more” link will open up a detailed map of the associated region. This regional map provides the locations of all known killing sites in the selected region. The markers for these sites contain basic data about the selected site and a “Learn more” link which connects to a web page with an expanded site profile. The top of the profile page contains basic information about the killing event and photos of the Holocaust monument, if one exists.
Typically, a site profile page provides links to view the following types of information:
   •    Descriptions of killing events at the site
   •    Jewish history of the nearby town or village
   •    Names of victims
   •    Survivor and witness testimony
   •    Documentary films
   •    Memoirs
   •    Documents and information about the "Righteous Among the Nation"
The Atlas is equipped with a unique “time slider” feature; by adjusting the position of the slider's pointers, users can see the number of victims and the locations of the killings for the selected time frame.
The search feature can be accessed by clicking on the “View larger version with search option” link at the bottom right of the maps.
Users can utilize the search feature to enter the name of a town or village and view a list of killing sites associated with that locality.

Content access routes
The SAMU platform provides two ways to access regional maps, individual maps and profiles of killing sites; the first is through the interactive map and the second is using the main menu.
Access via Interactive Map - the map provides two methods of obtaining information:
(1) Direct Access - clicking a marker on the map opens the marker’s label, which provides a link to the profile page associated with that particular killing site
(2) Search Engine - typing the name of a site or a nearby village or town into the search box will allow the user to locate information about the killing site that they are interested in
Access via Main Menu - the menu provides another way to access the same content. Clicking on the "Regions" menu will bring up a regional list of killing sites. Selecting the location of interest on this list will bring up the relevant regional maps, individual maps, and profiles of killing sites.

Access to section content
Access via Interactive Map
Clicking on the home page image allows the user to access the Shoah Atrocities Map of Ukraine. From this map, users can jump to a regional map by selecting a marker representing the targeted region. Regional maps contains all known killing sites, and information about each location can be obtained by clicking on the associated marker.
Access via Main Menu
Users can view Atlas content through the appropriate menu sections. Information related to a particular region can easily be accessed by clicking on the “Regions” section and then clicking on the name of the desired region. This will take the user to a regional page that contains links to the regional map, the list of killing site profiles, and the righteous people in the region.
